DEET- based insect repellants Several organisations - including US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are now suggesting DEET may not be as safe as you thought. This document states 'As long as consumers follow label directions and take proper precautions, insect repellants containing DEET do not present a health concern. Human exposure is expected to be brief, and long-term exposure is not expected.' Another EPA report required that manufacturers removed child safety claims on products sold with low levels of DEET, due to insufficient scientific data. In relation to sunscreen / DEET combination products - concern was raised that directions to 'reapply sunscreen generously and frequently' may pose unnecessary over exposure to DEET. The American Association of Pediatrics supports the use of DEET, with a series of caveats: * In formulations of <10% * Applied sparingly, according to product label instructions. * Only to exposed skin, and not to a child's face, hands, or skin that is irritated or abraded. * After the child returns indoors, treated skin should be washed with soap and water. |
